When and How We Started

The Rope was established on October 13,1975 with the spirit of becoming a pioneer hobby club of wood ship modelers in Japan.
Wood model kits of sailing ships were first imported to Japan in 1970,  the year Japan hosted World Expo in Osaka. At that time, there was few who engaged in wood model ship building as hobby.

Ginza ITOYA, one of the prestigious general stationery stores in Tokyo, started sales of these kits at its shop floor around 1971. In 1975, two men met at Ginza ITOYA and immediately become like minded friends and discussed about creating a hobby club of model ship building. They mined candidates and with assistance of Ginza ITOYA, seven members started frequent gatherings at the shop of Ginza ITOYA.

These original seven members decided to create a club and put its name as The Rope. This name was put because sailing rope is symbolic riggings of sailing ships and at the same time it explains the meaning of strong ties of friendship among the members.  This interpretation led to the coiled up logo of The Rope. This logo was designed by one of the original seven members.

King’s Hobby

Since The Rope started in 1975, there has been a boom in sailing ship modeling in Japan. When The Rope held their first exhibition, it turned out to be a big success. Thanks to a wide coverage by various local media, “King’s Hobby” has become a popular word for sailing ship modeling.

Rope became a popular word among the modelers. Since 1975, there have also been a number of additional clubs started all over Japan from Hokkaido to Okinawa. Some of these new clubs put the word ROPE in their name.
